In the wonderful movie The Wizard of Oz made way back in 1939 throughout the story Dorothy had the clear intention of finding her way home to Kansas.
But, "home" is not a place... or is it?
I believe "home" is actually a symbol for the greater self that we are searching for.
OK, back to the movie/story.
While on her travels she meets a
Scarecrow who is in search of Wisdom,
a Tin Man who is in search of Love,
and
a Cowardly Lion wanting desperately to conquer his fears.
Well, I believe that Dorothy's new friends were actually symbols of her own personal fears and doubts about herself... we share these same doubts and fears
What her friends wished for -
- Wisdom
- Courage
- Heart
these were what Dorothy needed in order to find her way home.
In our own journey through life,
just like the Tin Man, we hope to find Love - the essential inner Spirit - the I AM
Like the Scarecrow we search for wisdom to solve our own problems - 1 Kings 3:7-15
And, just like the Cowardly Lion we seek the courage to face our problems - Psalm 23:4
So after receiving a heart, a diploma, and a medal just Dorothy is left to receive what she has come for - a way home. Ah, but the Wizard flies off in his hot air balloon leaving Dorothy to wonder how she will ever get home.
In floats Glinda the Good Witch.
Dorothy: "Oh will you help me. Can you help me?"
Glinda: "You don't need to be helped any longer. You've always had the power to go back to Kansas."
Dorothy: "I have?"
Scarecrow: "Then why haven't you told her before?"
Glinda: "Because she wouldn't have believed me. She had to learn it for herself. "
Tin Man: "What have you learned, Dorothy?"
Dorothy: "Well, I think that it, that it wasn't enough just to want to see Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, and it's that, if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with. Is that right?"
Glinda: "That's all it is!"
Scarecrow: "But that's so easy, I should have thought of it for you."
Tin Man: "I should have felt it in my heart."
Glinda: "No, she had to find it out for herself."
We all have to find it out for ourselves.
We may look to others for direction, but in the end this is our journey.
Finding the Wizard... all it takes is looking inside.
Listen for that still small voice.
It's right there!
Enjoy the trip down your "yellow brick road."
